Mentor Resources - Books

  • Just Show Up by Drew Dyck

This is a book for the normal people who want to follow the teachings of Jesus, but recognize that they are unlikely to cure cancer or save the world. With humor and candor, our friend Drew reflects on his own faltering progress while recounting inspiring stories of how God rewards the persistent presence of ordinary people. Just Show Up challenges readers to show up for God, family, community, and themselves.

Drew says “We tend to think it's the big, bold moments that matter. In reality, it's the steady accumulation of small acts of obedience to God that add up to a life of meaning and impact.”

  • Scattered Minds by Gabor Mate

“Scattered Minds: The Origins and Healing of Attention Deficit Disorder – published in the U.S. as Scattered: How Attention Deficit Disorder Originates And What You Can Do About It – is written from the inside by a doctor who himself has Attention Deficit Disorder. It offers a completely new perspective on ADD and a new approach to helping children and adults living with the problems Attention Deficit Disorder presents.”

  • In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction by Gabor Maté

“Blending first-person accounts, riveting case studies, cutting-edge research and passionate argument, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction takes a panoramic yet highly intimate look at this widespread and perplexing human ailment.”

  • Unbroken Brain by Maia Szalavitz

“More people than ever before see themselves as addicted to, or recovering from, addiction, whether it be alcohol or drugs, prescription meds, sex, gambling, porn, or the internet. But despite the unprecedented attention, our understanding of addiction is trapped in unfounded 20th century ideas, addiction as a crime or as brain disease, and in equally outdated treatment.”
